SageBAL Provides Tiling Solution for Sage HQ

Products from tile adhesive manufacturer, Building Adhesives, featured widely on the new £70m Sage headquarters in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. This is a vast building which was two years in construction, and which now houses all 1,000 of the company's Newcastle-based employees.

The new global HQ features 2,600sq metre of floor tiling. Approximately 9,250 ceramic tiles have been laid on the atrium floor.

It is a building on an epic scale. 380,000sq feet in size, it features a number of pavilions based around a central atrium. The finished effect of the tiling on the atrium floor is striking.

Monarch Micron porcelain tiles were used in these areas, laid on an anhydrite screed. Tiling to toilets and shower areas featured ceramic tiles, as well as a Mosaic feature band in six different colours. Tiling is also used in the lifts. The main project contractor was Tolent Construction and the tiling contractor was The Tiling Company. All the tiles in these areas were supplied by Architectural Ceramics.

BAL products were used in a number of areas on the project. BAL PTB Flexible was used on the floor of the atrium with BAL Superflex Wide Joint Grout. A pourable thick bed flexible adhesive was specified mainly because of the large size of many of the tiles involved (up to 1200mm x 600mm). In the toilet areas, BAL Single Part Flexible was used with BAL Wide Joint Grout and with GT1 admixture.

"This is an eye-catching building within which the tiling helps to create a magnificent working space," says George Hunter, Regional Manager for Building Adhesives.
